Countering the Fear of Black-boxed AI in Maintenance: Towards a Smart Colleague
Digitalization forces improved maintenance in shop-floor systems. Companies have begun to upgrade their existing production lines by equipping them with new machinery or sensors. This enables intelligent tracking and control of manufacturing activities. Simultaneously, the advancement of computing power enables complex analyses including the adaptation of machine learning algorithms to gain new knowledge. However, previous research has revealed that intelligent decision support systems are only applied successfully if they are comprehensible for employees within the factory. Therefore, we have developed a prototype based on a comprehensible set of rules for automated anomaly identification in real-time. We include employeeâs expert knowledge from the very beginning to establish a sense of participation. This is improved and enhanced by techniques from the fields of process mining and machine learning. Thus, the prototype presents previously unknown error correlations in an understandable and descriptive way combining intelligent anomaly detection by a linked knowledge database system
Applications and Challenges of Task Mining: A Literature Review
Task mining is a technological innovation that combines current developments in process mining and data mining. Using task mining, the interactions of workers with their workstations can be recorded, processed, and linked with the business data of the organization. The approach can provide a holistic picture of the business processes and related tasks. Currently, there is no overview of application scenarios and the challenges of task mining. In our work, we reflect application scenarios as well as technological, legal, and organizational challenges of task mining using a structured literature review. The application areas include discovery of automation potentials, monitoring, as well as optimization of business processes. The challenges include the cleansing, collection, data protection, explainability, merging, organization, processing, and segmentation of task mining data
CEP erlaubt Echtzeitauswertungen komplexer Events, i.
Process Selection in RPA Projects â Towards a Quantifiable Method of Decision Making
The digital age requires companies to invest in value-creating rather than routine activities to drive innovation as a future source of competitiveness and business success. Thus, many companies are reluctant to invest in large-scale, costly backend integration projects and seek adaptable solutions to automate their front-office activities. Bridging artificial intelligence and business process management, robotic process automation (RPA) provides the promise of robots as a virtual workforce that performs these tasks in a self-determined manner. Many studies have highlighted potential benefits of RPA. However, little data is available on operationalizing and automating RPA to maximize its benefits. In this paper, we shed light on the automation potential of processes with RPA and operationalize it. Based on process mining techniques, we propose an automatable indicator system as well as present and evaluate decision support for companies that seek to better prioritize their RPA activities and to maximize their return on investment
Putative Chemosensory Receptors of the Codling Moth, Cydia pomonella, Identified by Antennal Transcriptome Analysis
The codling moth, Cydia pomonella, is an important fruit pest worldwide. As nocturnal animals, adults depend to a large extent on olfactory cues for detection of food and mates, and, for females, oviposition sites. In insects, odor detection is mediated by odorant receptors (ORs) and ionotropic receptors (IRs), which ensure the specificity of the olfactory sensory neuron responses. In this study, our aim was to identify chemosensory receptors in the codling moth as a means to uncover new targets for behavioral interference. Using next-generation sequencing techniques, we identified a total of 43 candidate ORs, one gustatory receptor and 15 IRs in the antennal transcriptome. Through Blast and sequence similarity analyses we annotated the insect obligatory co-receptor ORco, five genes clustering in a conserved clade containing sex pheromone receptors, one homolog of the Bombyx mori female-enriched receptor BmorOR30 (but no homologs of the other B. mori female-enriched receptors) and one gene clustering in the sugar receptor family. Among the candidate IRs, we identified homologs of the two highly conserved co-receptors IR8a and IR25a, and one homolog of an IR involved in phenylethyl amine detection in Drosophila. Our results open for functional characterization of the chemosensory receptors of C. pomonella, with potential for new or refined applications of semiochemicals for control of this pest insect

Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial
Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials.
Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure.
Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.

Do you really want to know why? Effects of AI-based DSS Advice on Human Decisions
Digital products and services make it possible to use data profitably. Particularly in highly complex applications, e.g., as those found in modern industry, such digital services in the form of intelligent decision support systems (DSS) can be a great support for human decision-making. On the other hand, these systems are subject to criticism because the underlying calculations are often not transparent and contain a residual error. This may be reflected in user rejection of the systemâs advice. To better understand the impact of such systems, the paper addresses the problem with an empirical investigation towards user confidence and performance. An industrial quality inspection scenario is used as an applied application case. The results highlight that intelligent DSSs affect and even improve user confidence and corresponding to their related performance. However, a significant difference in the influence of different transparency levels between black-box-, grey-box-, and white-box-based DSS tool support was rejected
Innovative possibilities for data collection, networking, and evaluation are unleashing previously untapped potential for industrial production. However, harnessing this potential also requires a change in the way we work. In addition to expanded automation, human-machine cooperation is becoming more important: The machine achieves a reduction in complexity for humans through artificial intelligence. In fractions of a second large amounts of data of high decision quality are analyzed and suggestions are offered. The human being, for this part, usually makes the ultimate decision. He validates the machineâs suggestions and, if necessary, (physically) executes them.
Both entities are highly dependent on each other to accomplish the task in the best possible way. Therefore, it seems particularly important to understand to what extent such cooperation can be effective. Current developments in the field of artificial intelligence show that research in this area is particularly focused on neural network approaches. These are considered to be highly powerful but have the disadvantage of lacking transparency. Their inherent computational processes and the respective result reasoning remain opaque to humans. Some researchers assume that human users might therefore reject the systemâs suggestions. The research domain of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) addresses this problem and tries to develop methods to realize systems that are highly efficient and explainable.
This work is intended to provide further insights relevant to the defined goal of XAI. For this purpose, artifacts are developed that represent research achievements regarding the systematization, perception, and adoption of artificially intelligent decision support systems from a user perspective. The focus is on socio-technical insights with the aim to better understand which factors are important for effective human-machine cooperation. The elaborations predominantly represent extended grounded research. Thus, the artifacts imply an extension of knowledge in order to develop and/ or test effective XAI methods and techniques based on this knowledge. Industry 4.0, with a focus on maintenance, is used as the context for this development.
